2024 Artist in Residence
JESSIKA SPENCER
WIRADJURI ARTIST
AND WEAVER
I’m Jessika, an Aboriginal Fibre Artist from the Sandhills of the Western Riverina, Narrungdera/ Narrandera, NSW.
I’m currently based on Ngunnawal, Ngambri and Wiradjuri Country
I’m the artist behind “Ngurru”, a small cultural business that focuses on weaving. (Ngurru is the Wiradjuri word for river reeds)
Combining and merging both traditional and contemporary techniques to create woven work, I produce hand-crafted cultural items and run weaving workshops for all skill-sets.
I weave and create everything from woven earrings, necklaces, baskets, dilly bags, mats and eel traps through to wall hangings and fishing nets.
Sustainability, land management and cultural heritage are at the core of my work; the materials used are bio-degradable and carefully collected from country.
My focus is empowerment and self-determination, and I create with this in mind.
